About Michelle -
When I was a young girl I remember watching my mother create cakes for our birthdays. Back in the 70's the fun shaped cakes started to become a big hit and wilton books were all the rage. I watched her create shaped out bears, roller skates and Telephones. Never could I imagine where that would lead me in my own life. After High School I had all intentions to go to art school and carry on with an art career. Art was always my first love and sketching, watercolor and sculpting were things I could never get enough of. That was side tracked when I met my husband and decided to follow him around the world with his military career. A good decision I am thankful for 35 years later. Two little ones later, while stationed in California, I was mailed my mothers cake supplies and decided to do a few cakes to make ends meet. That continued on for 21 years and 6 locations.
I learned so many baking and decorating styles at each location, travel was a great teacher. While in Little Rock I was blessed with meeting a wonderful lady named Agnes at Community Bakery. The only formal bakery I worked at. By the time we left that location i was the head decorator and had all of Agnes Bargiel's 40 year knowledge in my head. While stationed in New Mexico I was lucky enough meet and learn from Earlene Moore and to teach sugar art at the University of New Mexico Portales. Even though I had never taken a formal class myself, I realized this was something I loved....passing on the art of cake.
After a wonderful military career we settled back in Maryland and I decided to open our shop. With the help of my two daughter and close friends we opened Michelle's Cakes in 2011.
The world of cake decorating is something I will always be a part of. As I get older I know I want to go into teaching of sugar art and buttercream. passing on the knowledge of cake decorating the "correct way" is something I want to be a part of.
