Cake Dictionary:
Tiered or Layered? - a TIERED cake is a cake that has two cakes of different sizes stacked on top of each other similar to a wedding cake. ALL of our round cakes are 4" high or 2 layers of cake. Tiered cakes are priced per serving our round or square cakes are priced per 4" cake. So when you say you want a 2 layer cake we are thinking a basic - 4" high cake. IF you want an fancier art style cake your wanting a TIERED cake.
Fondant or Fondue - Fondant is like sugar play-dough...it's rolled and used as a covering over cakes filled with buttercream. It gives you a very clean and smooth looking cake. Fondue - was in the 70's where you dipped fruit in chocolate or fried meat...SO fun!
Gumpaste - this is similar to fondant but dries very hard. Most of the sugar flowers you see are made out of gumpaste. though it is edible it dries so hard you should never technically eat it. It is more for decoration and not for consumption.
Sugar Sheets - These are used to print images on. They are made from a corn starch style mixture. We do not lay these images directly on your cake..it's kinda gross. So we place them on gumpaste or fondant to dry hard and use as a plaque to sit off the cake. This makes removal easy and you don't have to eat someones head from a photo.
Rice Paper or Wafer Paper - These are made from Rice starch and are used in many applications. We print on them, make glittery butterflies and even make flowers with them. They do not hold up to moisture so in this humid climate we use them only when necessary.
10x and Oleo - Did you know that's Powdered Sugar and Margarine? we always use one and never the other.....only real butter!
